What is dry, eczema-prone skin?

Dry, eczema-prone skin is skin that struggles to hold on to moisture, so it often feels tight, rough or flaky and can become itchy, red or sore. Because its natural barrier is weakened, it loses water quickly and reacts more easily to soaps, weather and other everyday triggers.

This skin type is closely linked to eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, a common condition that leaves skin dry, itchy and inflamed, and to contact dermatitis, where the skin reacts to a particular irritant. Eczema affects both adults and children and is a medical condition, so it is worth seeing a GP or dermatologist for a diagnosis. Whatever the cause, dry and eczema-prone skin has the same daily needs: gentle cleansing, regular moisturising with rich emollients, and avoiding the things that trigger a flare-up.

Signs of dry, eczema-prone skin

Dry and eczema-prone skin can look and feel different from person to person, and it often comes and goes in flare-ups. The most common signs are:

Persistent dryness, tightness and a rough or flaky texture.

Visible redness and sore-looking patches.

Skin that reacts easily to soaps, wool, heat or cold weather.

Itching that can be intense, and is often worse at night.

Cracked, chapped or scaly skin, often on the hands, face or body folds.

Flare-ups that settle and then return, sometimes over many years.

If skin is very sore, weeping, cracked or infected, if it is not improving, or if a baby or child's eczema is spreading, please see your GP or a dermatologist, as eczema and dermatitis often need medical treatment.

What triggers dry, eczema-prone skin?

Dry, eczema-prone skin tends to flare in response to specific triggers. They vary from person to person, but the most common are:

Soaps, bubble baths and harsh detergents

Heat, sweating and overheating

Wool and rough or synthetic fabrics

Cold, dry weather and indoor heating

Fragrance and harsh skincare ingredients

Stress, and allergens such as dust or pet dander

Learning your own triggers, alongside moisturising regularly with a rich emollient, is one of the most effective ways to reduce flare-ups and keep skin comfortable.

How to care for dry, eczema-prone skin

The aim is to keep the skin barrier hydrated and protected, and to avoid anything that dries it out or irritates it. For dry and eczema-prone skin, moisturising often and generously usually matters more than any single active ingredient.

What to look for

  • Gentle, soap-free cleansing
  • Rich emollients and moisturisers, applied often
  • Fragrance-free formulas
  • Barrier-supporting, naturally sourced ingredients
  • Products that are dermatologically tested for sensitive skin

What to avoid

  • Soaps, bubble baths and foaming cleansers
  • Heavily fragranced products and potentially irritating essential oils
  • Long, hot baths and showers
  • Harsh scrubs and strong acid exfoliants
  • Letting skin dry out, and scratching when it itches

01.

Turmeric Butter & Donkey Milk Salve

(morning and evening)
Smooth a little onto any dry, flaky or sore patches elsewhere on the face, keeping well clear of the eyes. It is the richer balm in the range, best on skin that needs more comfort.

02.

Dry Eye Gel

(morning and evening, plus any time for comfort)
Apply a small amount to the eyelids and the skin around the eyes to soothe itching and hydrate dry, tight skin. It is designed for the skin around the eyes and should not be applied inside the eye.

03.

Dry Eye Concealer

(daytime, before make-up)
Smooth over the gel to cover and brighten the under-eye area while it keeps caring for the skin underneath.

+ Brows Hydrobrow Serum

(morning and evening, before brow make-up)
Stroke along the full length of the brows to soothe dry, flaky, itchy brows. You can wear it overnight too.

Turmeric Butter & Donkey Milk Salve

(morning and evening)
Smooth onto dry, sore or flaky patches anywhere on the body, such as the hands, elbows, knees or behind the ears. For best results, apply to skin that is still slightly damp after washing to help lock in moisture. A little goes a long way.

Scalp Shield Shampoo

(on wash days)
Wash as normal to cleanse the scalp and gently remove visible flakes, leaving it feeling clean and comfortable.

02.

Scalp Shield Tonic

(after washing, and between washes as needed)
After washing, apply a small amount to the scalp while it is still damp to help soothe and hydrate dry, itchy-feeling skin. Between washes, spray directly onto the scalp whenever it feels dry or itchy.

Braids & Weaves

For scalps left dry, itchy or uncomfortable by braids, weaves and other protective styles, Scalp Shield Tonic helps soothe itchy-feeling skin, hydrate the scalp and reduce the appearance of visible flaking, helping keep the scalp feeling comfortable.

Dr Eva Melegh, dermatologist specialising in sensitive and reactive skin, who recommends KALME for her rosacea patients
Dry and eczema-prone skin needs consistent moisturising and a gentle routine far more than strong active ingredients. I recommend the Hydrosil range to patients with very dry, itch-prone and eczema-prone skin because it is designed to replenish moisture and support the skin barrier, using gentle, naturally sourced ingredients, without steroids or fragrance.

Eczema and dermatitis are medical conditions. If skin is very sore, weeping, cracked or infected, if it is not improving, or if a baby or child's eczema is spreading, please speak to your GP or a dermatologist. Hydrosil skincare is designed to help moisturise and soothe dry, eczema-prone skin while supporting the skin barrier, and is not a replacement for medical treatment.
